In I AM ANASTASIA, director Thomas Ladenburger follows her personal and professional journey, including her physical transition, increasing demands on her as a military leader, and the stress of planning a wedding before being deployed to Afghanistan. With unprecedented support from top military officials, Anastasia leads her family, friends, colleagues, and more than 700 soldiers to a place of love, acceptance, and respect.

This is the story of Anastasia Biefang, lieutenant colonel in the German military, who was assigned male at birth. At the height of her career she decides to finally come out as transgender. Much to her surprise, she does not face any negative consequences in her career in the military. After her transition she becomes the first female commander in the history of the German military, leading a German armed forces´ battalion for cyber- and information domain service. The film follows her male to female transition and observes her taking over duties as a commander. Anastasia is not the only one transitioning- her battalion must also face up to changes in their mentality.

Biography
Thomas Ladenburger was born in 1975 in Ellwangen/Jagst. He began his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied for almost 2 years with a major in Interdisciplinary Media. Then he returned to Germany and continued his education at the University of Arts Berlin where he graduated as „Meisterschüler“ in 2005.
During his masters between 2003 and 2005 he was teaching at the University of Arts.
Besides his freelance-work for different TV and cinema productions as camera man and sound engineer, he realized and produced own film works.
